Rather than re-hash what all the financial press say about the pre-budget report (PBR), in the video below I provide my opinion of this recent update by the government. If you want the finer detail I would suggest you read the Financial Times summary of the PBR or even read the summary from the Treasury if you want the nitty gritty. However key points to highlight:
An increase in National Insurance rates from 2011 - not good news for dentists
VAT goes back to 17.5% from 1st January 2010 - not good news for dentists
50% tax rate is coming April 2010 - not good news for dentists
Freezing of the personal allowances - again not good news for dentists
Small company corporate tax rate will remain at 21% rather than originally due to increase to 22% in April 2010 - finally some good news for limited company dentists!
Overall a pretty uninspiring budget, fingers crossed it will have the desired effect, but I think UK economy needs a lot more than the Gordon and Alastair show. The increases being seen in personal taxation make incorporation an even more compelling option for some dentists.
