One Life, Live it.

I have just had a great 3 weeks with my family travelling from the UK to Morocco by land. It involved car, boat, train and even horse and cart. It was an experience I won't forget, and I look forward to planning my next big trip with my young kids. If you want to read a bit about our mad experiences check it out on my blog here.

In my role, I meet many interesting people, all craving one thing, more time.

Yet they work harder, to earn more (which they subsequently spend) to try and have more time. They get caught in a vicious cycle of working harder to make more money in the hope that some day this will bring them more time. They reach 50 (or 60) ready to retire, realising all that money they earnt and saved (say in a pension) is there but they now do not have the strength or energy to spend it (that is of course assuming they make it to retirement!).

Our society has conditioned us to believe that we must earn now, to live later, so at retirement, we will be able to enjoy life's real pleasures. Yet, i purposefully do not have a "pension" per se. However, i do have businesses, savings and investments, which fund my current lifestyle and if need be, my future needs. I don't live my life to build a pension for 25 years down the line, I live it to live now.Perhaps it is a bit drastic for many of my readers, but my view on life has been shaped by 3 major events in my life to make me think and live like this.

Three events that changed my life forever

The first event was seeing my mother pass away over a period of 6 years, battling breast cancer. She passed away when i was 14.

At the age of 31, one of my oldest and closest friends passed away with leukaemia after just a few months of finding out she had it. She died the day before my first son was born, it was very surreal.

And most recently, last year, my beautiful little daughter was born with major heart problems.

Each one of these events has shaped me to be who i am. Would I like to bring back my mum? Would I love to see my friend again? Would i like to ensure my daughter had no heart problems? Of course, however, these events have made me to be who i am.

No doubt the biggest event for me, which has had the most significant affect on my life has been the death of my mum when i was a teenager, her death taught me very clearly, that life can be short. i recall as a child she dreamed of owning a new BMW car (it was a big deal back then) and i remember her working hard saving up for this new car. I vividly recall visiting the Motor Show, sitting in the car and organising a test drive. But then the big "C" hit, and life was never quite same again. She never got the car.

It was going through this experience at such a poignant time in my life, that gave me the strength and experience to leave my big six figure salary in the City six years back. I hated my job, and knew i had to be bold and strong enough to make a decision to follow my aspirations.

Since then, I have not looked back managing to enjoy life to the max. We live in times where many people are worried about their future, yet my view, is we do not even know what is going to happen today, tomorrow, let alone 10 years down the line. So quit worrying about the future, and start living for today.
