The Samera Chronicles – September 2017
Well the summer holidays are finally over and although they started off a little wet and wind it’s back to school and back to work for all of us.
My summer consisted of juggling work with children but also getting the Mehra campervan across Europe. Highlights included sleeping under a glacier in the Swiss Alps, camping on the Tuscan Coast, and ever faithful Cinque Terre in Italy.
But now the children are back at school we can focus back on business. We have an extremely busy run up to Christmas at Samera, with new ideas, events, team members to name just a few!!
In this newsletter, a Inheritance tax, Practice sales updates, plus details of Max’s holiday antics!

Samera Accountancy + Tax Webinar
Inheritance tax – Working out how much you need
Inheritance tax (IHT) is a one-off tax paid on the value of the deceased’s estate above a set threshold – currently £325,000. The tax is set at 40% of any value over that threshold therefore it is important to plan ahead as with efficient planning to tax bill can be reduced significantly.
Please join us on Wednesday 20th September for our webinar on this subject. We will cover questions such as the below;
- What do you need to think about for your residential property?
- What about my dental practice – what happens to this?
- What should I do with my cash saving and investments

Update from Nigel Samera Finance
Having returned to the UK from Sunny Greece it was great to see that in my absence my support team drew down a tax facility and prepared the cases for two other deals.
Just before I left we completed on a million pound plus deal for a dental practice with one of the major lenders and we are now looking at five other practice purchases. Two are awaiting valuations and the rest are either with credit teams or in the process of being submitted.
We recently submitted and had agreed a case for a chiropractor and we are awaiting the valuation on that one as well as currently working on two day care nursery cases. All in all a busy return from holiday.

Max’s Holiday Antics
After an extraordinary vacation last Summer to the South of Tenerife , where I attended a scientific and artistic festival, we decided to head to Italy this year for our summer holiday. We flew to Roma and from there we went south towards the Amalfi coast and Sorrento with its huge lemons and fantastic views, before heading back to see my family in Umbria.
As expected our holiday was full of fun, precious family time, lots of food, sunshine and red wine and because I am driven by an immense curiosity about the world and people in general, I always try to learn something new. For example in the Pantheon in Roma, the Romans celebrated April 21 as the founding date of the city, and the impressive sight of their Emperor standing at the entrance of the Pantheon surrounded by light coming from inside the pantheon might have been seen as something that raised their emperor to the level of the gods. Extraordinary!
Something else I learnt was that my favourite wine , Brunello di Montalcino , cannot be released for sale until at least five years after the harvest.
Knowing this might not be useful , obviously , but there is a big idea here. The idea is my approach to holiday and to work and life in general ; Everyone you will ever meet knows something that you don’t. This is troubling for many of us know it-alls , but its always a lesson, a reminder to respect everyone’s knowledge and learn from them, an exercise that will help to bring out the best in you!
Our You Tube page is doing really well, we have 100 videos, offering advice and tips, and over 150 subscribers which is now growing well. Please take a look and get in contact if you have any questions.
